The Article

[edit]

The article is a bit thin. I'd like to bulk it up. The Red Raiders have a long, rich history so it shouldn't be difficult to come up with some good info. --Wordbuilder 04:21, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If no one objects, I'm going to significantly shorten the portion about the mascots, which is the bulk of the article. Wikipedia already has articles on both The Masked Rider and Raider Red so I'll link to those. --Wordbuilder 13:17, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I made small addition concerning the November 1st 2008 football game, it would be great if others could expand upon that. Bladezor (talk) 12:43, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Baseball & Tennis

[edit]

We need something for these two sports. I'd be happy to write it if someone will point me in the direction of some good info. That goes for any of the other sports, too. --Wordbuilder 19:31, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Add to that: golf, track, and whatever other sport you have info on. --Wordbuilder 14:06, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I wrote a little bit about baseball and added a graphic, but I don't have much more. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Elred (talkcontribs) 01:47, 21 April 2007 (UTC).[reply]
Thanks. Your additions look great. --Wordbuilder 15:01, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bob Knight

[edit]

Does anyone have a good photo of Bob Knight either wearing Texas Tech attire or clearly at TTU?

Thanks, Elred! →Wordbuilder 14:42, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

More photos needed

[edit]

We still need photos of Mike Leach, Kristy Curry, and other coaches. →Wordbuilder 17:29, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Rivals

[edit]

I was wondering if we should change Tech's main rival to just A&M? The general consensus at Tech is that A&M is our biggest rival, with UT and OU a close second and third respectively. Almosthonest06 (talk) 02:46, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Check it now. I left OU in but we really need a ref to back up the claim. →Wordbuilder (talk) 02:55, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think A&M, UT, OU, and OSU would count as rivalries. I think TTU is about to begin a series of yearly games in Dallas against OSU, so that rivalry actually is going to have a sanctioned format. ...it's true though, that the rivalry between TTU and A&M is the only one where there is some degree of actual hatred. heheh. --Elred (talk) 04:08, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
"the rivalry between TTU and A&M is the only one where there is some degree of actual hatred. heheh." After the football game on November 1st, 2008 attendees would tell you otherwise. I believe there's more hatred between Tech and UT this year, therefore I don't think the degree of 'hatred' and rivalry is necessarily consistent year to year.Bladezor (talk) 13:04, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. Even before the game, Elred changed the article's text to give more priority to the Tech-UT rivalry. A&M just isn't competitive against Tech. →Wordbuilder (talk) 14:40, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think it really depends on who you ask. For the most part, students will tell you A&M. There was a huge desire to beat UT this year compared to A&M because A&M isn't doing so hot this year and we kind of just wrote them off. This UT vs. Tech game was arguably the biggest game in Tech football history so it's no wonder that you would get that vibe. I don't mind changing it because a lot of people will say UT as well, but we should try to find some solid sources to support both teams.--Almosthonest06 (talk) 18:57, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

layout

[edit]

I'm not real high on the layout of this page. Mainly, I hate the fact that the first thing beneath the table of contents is the little bullet list of sports. It makes the page look kinda bare. Any ideas on how we could reorganize this to make it look better? I was looking at putting some sort of table for the sports that could be right-aligned or something. What do you think?--Elred (talk) 04:10, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Or, we could just convert that list into prose. They're simple bullets, so something like, "Mens' varsity sports at Texas Tech include baseball, basketball, cross country, football..." →Wordbuilder (talk) 22:42, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A-class or GA goal

[edit]

I think we need to add a 'history' section. I think Michigan State Spartans is a pretty good template for us to use. I don't think this should be that difficult. In many ways the athletic article should be easier to compile than the main university article was.--Elred (talk) 22:12, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Heck, can't we just jump right to FAC? {;o) Seriously, I'd like to see this article and the football article both make it to GA or A-class as well. →Wordbuilder (talk) 22:28, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not opposed to going after FA eventually with it. I think we're pretty well initiated into the process now, but it's not as pressing an issue for me as the main page was. Oddly, there doesn't seem to be a precedent for a university's athletic page making FA. That is especially surprising considering that TAMU has pushed a bunch of their pages through but they've left their "TAMU Aggies" page at B-class.--Elred (talk) 02:16, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Lady Raiders?

[edit]

It's not just the women's basketball team that uses "Lady Raiders". For instance, track & field and golf. However soccer and softball use "Red Raiders". On cursory look, it appears that "Lady Raiders" is used when there is a men's team in the same sport; otherwise "Red Raiders" is used even by the women. →Wordbuilder (talk) 00:06, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's probably right. I think we had it like that at first, I don't know who changed it.--Elred (talk) 02:14, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. Since it was still third-level, I wasn't sure if it was intentionally left or just missed when the traditions stuff was cut. →Wordbuilder (talk) 14:38, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

It feels like we have a sea of navboxes at the bottom of this page. I think we should possibly remove the university one, and the ones for the individual sports. Those can go on the page for each sport. Otherwise we should probably nest them or something. What do you think?--Elred (talk) 02:57, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed I think we should drop the 2 3 coaches boxes, leaving just Texas Tech Red Raiders Athletics, TTU, and Big 12. --MarkRomero (talk) 13:56, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Agree with just leaving the three Mark specified. →Wordbuilder (talk) 14:40, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Version 0.7

[edit]

This article has been nominated for Version 0.7 of the offline Wikipedia release but did not meet the standards for importance. It has been put on Wikipedia:Release_Version_Nominations/Held_nominations for further review. Please see that page for details.

Unfortunately, this article doesn't rank highly enough in importance to be included in Version 0.7, which is limited to the top 1% articles on Wikipedia. If the article were an FA, we could probably justify including it, but as a C-Class article it's hard to make a strong case. Thanks for the nomination, Walkerma (talk) 07:00, 20 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Big 12 WikiProject

[edit]

I'm trying to gauge the interested in created a Big 12 WikiProject and wondering who would like to be involved. There are already pages for WikiProject Big Ten and WikiProject ACC. A Big 12 project would cover the schools themselves and anything to do with conference sports including: events, rivalries, teams, seasons, championships and lore. There is already quite a bit of activity here on Wikipedia regarding the Big 12, and I think a project could help coordinate and unify our efforts. Please see Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals/Big 12 if you are interested, and add your name to the list. Grey Wanderer (talk) 00:31, 26 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Spilt this page or move article to: Texas Tech Lady Raiders and Red Raiders

[edit]

All of the Texas Tech women's teams are the Lady Raiders not Red Raiders. Shouldn't this article either be only about the men's sports and women's on a seperate page? Louisiana Tech's athletics article seems to have the right idea. Their article has both names in the article's title: Bulldogs and Lady Techsters. Only having Red Raiders discredits the women's program. RedRaider04 (talk) 22:17, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I thought, formally, only the women's basketball team is referred to as Lady Raiders. The other teams are still Red Raiders. Nevertheless, I agree with the move. There is not enough material to split the article. →Wordbuilder (talk) 17:47, 27 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The move should be to Texas Tech Red Raiders and Lady Raiders. →Wordbuilder (talk) 17:59, 27 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I seriously doubt it discredits the women's teams not to change the article. The teams aren't officially the Lady Raiders according to media guides on www.texastech.com. The name Lady Raiders is used as a secondary moniker and only the basketball team uses it as a primary moniker. I oppose any move of this article to include Lady Raiders in the article name but if this article is to be moved it should be only if the, dozens of others that will have to be moved as well ex: Central Arkansas Bears, Florida A&M Rattlers, North Florida Ospreys, Georgia Bulldogs, Georgia Southern Eagles, Kennesaw State Owls, Savannah State Tigers, Eastern Kentucky Colonels, Murray State Racers, Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, Grambling State Tigers, New Orleans Privateers, Northwestern State Demons, UMass Minutemen, Jackson State Tigers, Missouri State Bears, Campbell Fighting Camels, East Carolina Pirates, Oklahoma State Cowboys, CSU Buccaneers, Clemson Tigers, Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, Memphis Tigers, Baylor Bears, Lamar Cardinals, TCU Horned Frogs, Liberty Flames, and Wyoming Cowboys. This is bigger than just Texas Tech. What happens here will effect these teams too. NThomas (talk)
I've redirected Texas Tech Lady Raiders to this article. Perhaps that is sufficient. →Wordbuilder (talk) 14:47, 29 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The women's teams are called the Lady Raiders. Just look here, here, here, and here. Even the Big 12 has the other sports, not including basketball, as Lady Raiders. Those other pages need to be moved too. RedRaider04 (talk) 20:07, 29 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The Toreador articles probably don't follow everything to the "T". I think this issue needs to be expanded to the other schools also. NThomas (talk) 17:30, 1 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This is a ridiculous semantic issue. Lady Raiders are Red Raiders, and their history and accomplishments are one in the same. --Elred (talk) 18:08, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed split of section "Club sports" to Student life at Texas Tech University

[edit]

Oppose. There currently isn't enough information in this section to warrant splitting it into its own article. Even as a stub, its notability would be tenuous. →Wordbuilder (talk) 20:44, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned references in Texas Tech Red Raiders

[edit]

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Texas Tech Red Raiders's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Texas Tech Red Raiders and Lady RaidersTexas Tech Red Raiders – As others universities have been doing the past few years, Texas Tech has been moving towards dropping the "Lady Raiders" moniker from the nickname of its women's sports with the main use for the women's basketball team (like Tennessee). Women's tennis is the only other women's sport to use "Lady" in their nickname. The NCAA has been using Red Raiders for women's sports since 2012. Other schools have been using "Red Raiders" for the TTU women's games notes, and the list goes on. It is also pretty evident based on the Wikipedia articles for the school's women's sports... only the women's basketball team uses "Lady" in the article title. 4(5) national championships or 1(2)?

[edit]

How many national championships have Texas Tech teams won? The article says 4 in the lead paragraph, but I only saw the one Women's Basketball title on the list. (If they win the NCAA MBB title on 4-8-19, then the argument will be 2 vs 5) Thanks in advance108.217.190.154 (talk) 19:52, 7 April 2019 (UTC)ES[reply]

At a quick glance, I would say it must be counting those in the "other" portion but I think the count is still off. →Wordbuilder (talk) 22:49, 7 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
